The Difference Between Post-Op Manual Lymph Drainage and Body Contour Massage Such As Lypossage.

As I consult with clients about their goals on post-op MLD, I still hear about client misconceptions on what lymph drainage is regarding the pressure they experience from other therapists. Post-op MLD and body contouring have some differences in the intention and what it is used for. Many clients still believe that post-op lymph drainage also includes body contour which is actually false.

Post-Op Manual Lymph Drainage (MLD) and Body Contour Massage (such as Lypossage) are two different techniques that serve distinct purposes. Let's delve into each of them and their appropriateness after cosmetic surgery:

1. Post-Op Manual Lymph Drainage (MLD):

MLD is a gentle massage technique designed to stimulate the lymphatic system, helping to reduce swelling and improve the flow of lymph fluid in the body. It is commonly used after surgical procedures, especially cosmetic surgeries like liposuction or breast augmentation, to aid in the healing process and reduce post-operative swelling and bruising. MLD can also enhance the body's natural detoxification process, promote tissue regeneration, and improve overall healing.

2. Body Contour Massage (Lypossage):

Lypossage is a non-invasive massage technique focused on body contouring and improving the appearance of cellulite. It involves a specific combination of manual deep-tissue massage, lymphatic drainage, and myofascial release techniques. The primary goal of Lypossage is to reduce the appearance of cellulite, sculpt the body, and improve skin texture. It is typically offered as a series of sessions targeting specific areas of the body, like the thighs, buttocks, and abdomen without the use of invasive surgery.

Using these services after cosmetic surgery:

For Post-Op Manual Lymph Drainage (MLD):

Post-surgery, MLD can be very beneficial as it helps to reduce swelling and promote healing. Many surgeons recommend or offer MLD as part of the post-operative care protocol, especially for procedures like liposuction or other surgeries that may cause significant swelling. However, it is essential to consult your surgeon before starting any massage therapy after surgery to ensure it is safe and suitable for your specific case. This manual treatment is very gentle.

For Body Contour Massage (Lypossage):

Lypossage is generally not recommended immediately after cosmetic surgery, especially if you've undergone invasive procedures like liposuction or tissue removal. The body needs time to heal after surgery, and aggressive massage techniques like Lypossage might interfere with the healing process and potentially cause complications. It's best to wait until you have fully recovered and received clearance from your surgeon before considering body contour massage.

In summary, Post-Op Manual Lymph Drainage (MLD) can be beneficial after cosmetic surgery to aid in healing and reduce swelling. However, Body Contour Massage like Lypossage should be postponed until you have fully healed and received approval from your surgeon. Always consult your surgeon or healthcare provider before starting any massage therapy after a surgical procedure to ensure it is safe and appropriate for your specific condition.
